How to Get Started with Fostering

Fostering a pet is a simple and rewarding experience. While the process may vary slightly depending on the agency, the general steps remain the same. Below is an overview of what to expect, but we encourage you to check with the specific agency you’re interested in for their exact requirements.

Step 1:
Find the Right Foster Agency

Different foster agencies have different requirements and processes. We’ve compiled a list of trusted organizations in the Bay Area to help you find the best fit for your home and life.

Step 2:
Complete an Application

After choosing an agency, fill out their foster application to help match you with a suitable pet. Most applications ask about:

  • Your home setup and living situation

  • Experience with pets (if any)

  • Preferences for fostering (size, breed, medical needs, etc.)

  • Availability and time commitment

Step 3:
Get Approved and Prep Your Home

After reviewing your application, the agency may conduct an interview to ensure a safe environment for fostering. Once approved, they will provide guidance on preparing, including:

  • Basic supplies you may need

  • How to introduce a foster pet to your home

  • Expectations for feeding, training, and other care

Step 4:
Welcome Your Foster Pet

Once you’re matched with a pet, the agency will arrange pickup or delivery. During your foster period, they will check in and offer support as needed. If any medical care or supplies are required, agencies will guide you through the process.

Step 5:
Help Them Find A Forever Home

Foster pets may already have adopters lined up, or they may need help finding one. Many agencies will ask for photos, updates, or participation in adoption events to help match your foster with a loving family. If you decide to adopt your foster pet yourself, agencies often have "foster-to-adopt" options.
